Using surfing as a therapeutic intervention for wellbeing

Surf therapy is the use of guided surf sessions as a clinical intervention for children and young people experiencing anxiety, depression, trauma, or social isolation. Programmes typically run six to eight weeks with trained surf mentors and a one-to-one ratio in the water. Four registered charities anchor the field. In the UK, The Wave Project (Charity Commission 1163421, founded 2010 in Cornwall) has worked with over 2,200 young people aged 8-24 and operates in seven UK regions. In South Africa, Waves for Change (registered NPO, founded 2009) has reached more than 10,000 adolescents across 43 under-resourced communities. In the US, the Jimmy Miller Memorial Foundation (501(c)(3), founded 2005 in Manhattan Beach, California) runs the longest-established American surf-therapy programme.
The Wave Project and similar programmes informed the design of the Finn Wardman World Explorer Fund, which makes grants to young people for ocean and outdoor experiences.
